From the south Mediterranean fast-growing Prickly Pear Cactus, the Italian manufacture Skalindi extracts the fiber to create unique furniture. The extraction of the fiber from the green cladodes is meticulous and almost entirely manual, respecting the lifecycle of the plant.
By drying, the fiber extracted by the cladodes (the branches of the plant), turns into a resistant woody fiber that after a patented process becomes suitable to be included in beautiful furniture as a substitute of the wood.
The Prickly Pear Cactus is a fast-growing plant, that can vegetate and reproduce itself very quickly and spontaneously, with very little quantity of water and for this reason, is classified as “infestant” and needs to be pruned and thinned regularly. For all these reasons the entire process can be considered eco-sustainable.
