The leaves of ananas are the byproduct used by Piñatex® to create this natural, sustainably-sourced, cruelty-free new material similar to leather.
The idea of Piñatex® was developed over many years of R&D by Dr. Carmen Hijosa, leathergoods expert, who was consulting on the Philippines leather export industry in the 1990s. She ended up being shocked by the environmental impact of mass leather production and chemical tanning and she started to think about a sustainable alternative.
The inspiration came by the use of plant fibers in traditional weaving garments and by the principles of a Circular Economy and Cradle to Cradle values. The material is today applied in various fashion products, like clothes, bags, accessories (see here products made with Piñatex®).
“Design is a connecting tool between people, economics, and the environment – and out of this communion, understanding and respect new ideas and products with integrity can come about.”
– DR CARMEN HIJOSA
